Clear Lake Dentures FAQ
Can I sleep in my dentures?
No. Sleeping in a denture or partial is not healthy for your mouth. Not only can it predispose you to oral infections such as thrush, but the pressure of sleeping in your denture can also accelerate changes in your bone and facial shape. Always remove it before bedtime.
Should I use denture adhesive or paste?
A well-fitting denture shouldn’t need adhesive strips or denture paste to keep it in place throughout the day. If your denture is rubbing or slipping, be sure to see our Clear Lake dentist to have it adjusted. Adhesives do help sometimes, but you shouldn’t have to rely on them.
Can you add teeth to my partial denture?
Occasionally, yes. Partial dentures are made to fit around the healthy teeth you still have. If one is removed because of oral disease, it may be possible for us to add a tooth onto your partial to fill in that space. This decision is made on a case-by-case basis, depending on your current partial design.
How long do dentures last?
A well-cared-for denture can easily last 5-10 years, depending on the person. Because they’re often made out of acrylic, it’s normal for the denture to gradually wear down over time. Fortunately, they are affordable, so updating your denture is recommended at the end of its lifespan.
What should I do if I crack or break my denture?
Do not attempt to repair your denture or glue it back together, as this can lead to serious oral injuries or infection because of harmful chemicals. Bring your denture to our Clear Lake dentist to have it repaired if possible.
Do you offer denture repairs?
Depending on the extent of damage to your denture, we may be able to repair it in our office or have it fixed at our denture lab. Severely damaged dentures will need to be replaced altogether in most cases
Can dentures snap onto dental implants?
Some types of prosthetics can act as an overdenture or snap-on denture. These dentures clip onto 2-4 dental implants in your mouth to hold them in place throughout the day. The added stability of the dental implants prevents your plate from shifting, rubbing, or rocking throughout the day. Overdentures are still removable and should be taken out at night.
What is the difference between a full and partial denture?
Full dentures (sometimes called “plates”) cover your entire arch of teeth, restoring all of the upper or lower teeth with one appliance. They cannot be worn if you still have any teeth remaining. Whereas partial dentures clip onto and around the healthy teeth you still have. A partial replaces several teeth at a time, filling in the ones that are missing while you retain your other healthy teeth
Do all partial dentures have a silver or metal base?
Some partial dentures have a flexible, pink acrylic base. But most are made of a durable metal framework to support multiple teeth simultaneously.
Do I need my dentures relined?
If your denture is starting to rub certain points in your mouth, feels uncomfortable, or seems loose, you may need to have it relined. It’s natural for our bone anatomy to gradually shrink when we have missing teeth, which can lead to a looser fit if you wear dentures. Relines buy more time to help dentures last longer.
Do I need dental checkups if I wear dentures?
Yes. Because soft tissue changes affect your dentures and you’re still prone to oral infections, our Clear Lake dentist will still need to see you for regular exams and oral cancer screenings at least 1-2 times a year.
How much do dentures cost?
Denture costs in Clear Lake vary depending on the type of denture you’re getting and if you’re using any dental insurance benefits. Rosas Family Dentistry will provide a clear, easy-to-understand treatment plan with pricing for all of our patients who need new dentures.
Do dentures last as long as dental implants?
Unfortunately, no. Dental implants can last for life, but dentures only last for several years at a time. The lower price for dentures makes them popular for most of our patients, but it’s possible to upgrade to dental implant treatment if you choose to do so at a later point in time.
