    What to Expect

We understand that dental visits can be extremely stressful for patients with dementia. That’s why we take the time to reassure our patients throughout their dental appointment. As a dental practice, we encourage caregivers to prioritize preventive dentistry for individuals with dementia.

Preventive dentistry includes dental exams and cleanings, oral cancer screenings, and fluoride treatment. By preventing common dental problems, patients can avoid extensive and invasive, anxiety-inducing procedures in the future.

Typically, we advise our patients to come in for dental exams and cleanings every six months. However, patients with dementia might need to come in more often. This way, any deficits in at-home dental hygiene can be met via professional cleanings.

Besides preventive dentistry, we also offer restorative interventions, including periodontal treatments, partial and complete dentures, bridges, and implants. Our dentist will only recommend a particular treatment if it’s in the best interests of the patient.

Dental Care Tips for Patients with Alzheimer’s and Dementia

If you have a loved one living with dementia, it’s crucial to ensure that they don’t neglect their oral health. Excellent oral health contributes to the overall well-being of an individual. In the case of individuals with dementia, you can safeguard their oral health at home by taking the following measures:

    • Find a reputable dentist who can provide compassionate, ongoing care for the individual. If you’re in Houston, TX, and are looking for a dentist for patients with dementia, Rosas Family Dentistry is the dental practice to call.
    • Provide short, simple, easy-to-understand instructions for your loved one. Instead of saying “brush your teeth,” consider saying “hold your toothbrush like this” and “put some paste on the toothbrush.” Break the instructions into bite sizes that are easier to follow.
    • Watch out for indications of potential mouth pain. Some patients with dementia may not be able to articulate their discomfort. Refusal to eat and strained facial expressions may point to underlying dental pain.

Contact Rosas Family Dentistry today to experience exceptional and compassionate care for you and your loved one.

Dr. Rosas and her staff are very professional as well as understanding and caring. After not seeing a dentist for awhile due to Dr. Lake's retirement and then the pandemic, some of my teeth ended up with a few issues. Dr. Rosas was able to explain what all of my issues were, why the issues had happened and what needed to be done to fix them within a reasonable timeframe. Thank you so much!
I highly recommend Dr Rosas. She is super nice and informative. The whole staff is amazing!!
